How to Shop Safely on the Internet

HISTORY

The Internet has its origin in 1969, when a project developed by the US Department of Defense was developed into ARPANET.The basic idea of ARPANET was to create a secure network able to work even if major sections of this network were attacked or failed. From its first stages, the Internet was conceived as a robust environment.

In the beginning, the ARPANET was integrated only by University and Government computers, and the programs and applications used in this network were as simple as: e-mail, news groups and remote connection with other computers. In 1971, the network members were about two dozen sites, and they had started to exchange information not related only to ARPANET, but the network started to grow as a very important tool for research and collaboration among university and government sites.

Around 1988 the ARPANET had grown to more than 88,000 computers. There was a worm created by a student of Cornell University that affected and blocked 10% of the computers, so many of the members decided to get out of the ARPANET system, developing new organisations and groups of members, trying to survive out of the ARPANET original network.

1989 is the year when the Internet was born officially, and moved from a government project to a free and public operational network. By that time, the network had more than 100,000 members.
